A special thing I do every December to bring a little sunshine into my daughters life is I plan a weekly treasure hunt. I started it when she was very young to help her deal with all the excitement of Christmas. Its always something little or something to read or a craft to make her smile. As she gets older I have continued to do this however I hide things that suit her age. I write clues and she has to work her way around the house to find the hidden treasure.

Cookies. Cookies on a cold day. Warm, just out of the oven, baked from scratch cookies. Chocolate chip for the son, ginger snaps for the daughter.

Taking the time to make warmth and tenderness make a family.

A warm cat, curled upon the blanket in your lap, everyone snuggled on the couch watching a movie from childhood. Everyone knows all the lines, each picks a character and does the voices.

Warmth comes from love and family, and for my family, warmth comes from being together.

What I do is to buy several gift cards from a coffee shop. Then when I see a policeman or ambulance drivers I give them a gift card. I feel they have a very important job as well as stressfull. So I just like to give them a little smile for their day.
It makes me feel good and sunshine to their life.
    Thank you

Every day I call my elderly parents to make sure all is well with them. Every Saturday my husband and I do their groceries for them. This little thing brings them such great joy.

I contact my son and daughter-in-law on a daily basis and talk to my 3 wonderful granddaughters, I think they bring me more sunshine then I them. One saturday a month gramma and poppa take the girls overnight, we try to do the things they love to do. We spend quality time with them. They bring so much joy to me I hope that I give them as much sunshine as they bring to me.

I try to treat everyone with dignity. I like to think that I am treating them the way I wish to be treated. In my job respect is first and foremost to every one. You see I am a bad debt collection officer and stress is a very large part of my day. I try to help those that I deal with. I try to bring them a little sunshine to show themthat even though they have a financial problem, they are people too and deserve to be treated with kindness and understanding, I often get a big thank you from them. They thank me for understanding their problems and working with them to get them out of the situation they are in. Sometimes after a bill is cleared they call just to say hi and that makes me feel good.

So, maybe it is the people that I deal with on a daily basis that bring me the sunshine instead of me bringing it to them and you should award each of them a magic bag and a trip to the spa, how wonderful would that be!

Merry Christmas to all of you!!

Our adult son is working through an Apprentiship program so he has been living at home because the large pay won't come until he has completed his program. So on a couple of occassions, I had to move his car to get mine out of the driveway and of course his gas gage was on empty. So I went and filled it up without saying a word. When he left later that day and headed to the gas station, he noticed the full tank and called me to ask if I had done this and told me " That's why I love you Ma!"

I write personal messages to people I hear of, who are unwell, lonely, or maybe just need a cheery hello or a bit of sunshine in their lives. Writing letters is a dying art, and they are greatly appreciated. I never send a card, for any reason, without a note. Even if someone just pops into my head, for no particular reason, I send a note, just to say hello. I always have a supply of cards, for every sort of occasion, on hand.

I am a nurse. On a daily routine, while at work in the Nursing Home where I am employed, I hug and love my residents. They enjoy this human contact. We all need to give and receive LOVE.
Many years ago, my husband lost his battle with cancer. My children were young at ages 9, 11 and 16 years. Our loss was always open for discussion. We focused on the road ahead. One summer, my younger children travelled and camped across Canada on a road trip. Their young eyes had the opportunity to see a world beyond our small province. We experienced as much of what Canada had to offer as we could. The pure country-side views of landscapes, CN Tower, Canada's Wonderland, Niagara Falls, the Bad Lands, West Edmonton Mall, the Rocky Mountains, Vancouver Island, and the Pacific Ocean. And then back again. Whew!!!! And so much more in each beautiful province. We have a Great Country!!!
My three children are now grown and live and study on the other side of this great country of ours, CANADA. I love my children. It brings me joy to see them follow their hearts.

Instead of starting my weekend mornings off with household chores I go with him to have a morning coffee. He likes to read the sports page and it gives him a chance to share his week happenings. It's a chance for us to connect.
  • Celeigh Baker, British Columbia

    To Whom It May Concern:

My name is Shelley Baker and I am entering this submission on behalf of my daughter, Celeigh; as she would never do this for herself!
From the moment my daughter was born, it was immediately evident that she possessed very special qualities. Now 22 years of age, I can honestly say that she is one of the loveliest people that I know and am privileged to share my life with.

To be thoughtful and considerate comes so naturally to Celeigh. She is always the first one to offer assistance and the last to remain to make certain that every need has been fulfilled. Celeigh's bubbly personality is infectious as she lights up any room that she enters! Her wonderful sense of humour, high energy and thoughtful manner has a tendency to make all those around her, become better people!

Over the past eight years, I have not been in the best of health. The one person that I have always been able to rely upon is my daughter. Without being asked, Celeigh is always there to offer her support;especially during those most difficult of times.

Without a doubt, my daughter Celeigh is a most deserving candidate for a day of pampering at a spa. My hope is that this entry receives both your attention and endorsement.

    Most sincerely,
    Shelley Baker,

My wife (like many other mothers) always puts her children and family before herself, this is how I believe she does indeed bring sunshine into our lives even though we (myself&the children) take this for granted sometimes. She is the sunshine in our lives with out a doubt, she is so unselfish.
